Your information is yours
To tell you how much you can save we need to know how much electricity you use. In Texas that data belongs to you by law, and there is an official way to share it without giving anyone your password. Here is exactly what we ask for, what we never ask for, and how we look after it.
What we ask you for
- Your service address
- Who sends you the bill
- An email and a phone number
- A photo of the meter or the bill, if you have one
What we NEVER ask for
- The password to your electricity account
- Your Social Security number by message or email
- Your card number by message
- Immigration paperwork
How we look after it
- We don't sell or share your data without your written authorization
- We use it only to find you a plan and review your account
- We keep customer information 12 months after your membership ends; broker records 2 years, as PUCT rules require
- You can ask us to delete it whenever you want
The Smart Meter Texas permission
Your smart meter records how much electricity you use. That information is yours, not the provider's — Texas utility law says so. Smart Meter Texas is the official system where that data lives, and from there you can give us permission to see it.
We file the request
With your address and the meter photo we fill in the request. You don't have to log into anything.
You get an email — in your language
Smart Meter Texas writes to you directly. You approve or decline. Without your click, we see nothing.
We see your usage, not your money
The permission lets us see kilowatts: how many and at what hours. It gives no access to your account, your payments or your card.
And if you'd rather not give that permission?
No problem. There are three other ways to get to the same number, and all of them are yours.
A photo of your bill
It is the single most useful document: it carries your usage, your average price and the date your contract expires.
Your 12-month history
Your provider is required to give it to you free if you ask. We tell you exactly what to say, or we join the call with you.
Just what you paid
From what you paid over recent months (from your banking app, for example) we can work out an estimate. Less precise, but enough to know whether it is worth going further.
